  15. <p>     Ten thousand years ago Tennessee was inhabited by
  16. prehistoric Indian peoples. The first white man known to have
  17. come to Tennessee was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in
  18. 1540. At that time the dominant tribes were the Cherokee,
  19. Shawnee, and the Chickasaw. The first permanent white settler
  20. was William Bean, who in 1769 built a cabin on the Watauga River
  21. in northeast Tennessee. In 1779 Jonesborough became the first
  22. chartered town in what is now Tennessee.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     Tennessee settlers played a vital part in winning the
  25. American Revolutionary War. The "Overmountain Men" helped to
  26. defeat the British at the Battle of King's Mountain, a victory
  27. which proved to be a major turning point in the war.
  28. </p>
  29. <p>     Tennessee was at first part of North Carolina, and then was
  30. known briefly as the State of Franklin. It later became part of
  31. the "U.S. Territory South of the River Ohio," and finally was
  32. admitted to the Union as the State of Tennessee--the 16th
  33. state--on June 1, 1796.
